The Physician Assistant Profession
The public often times confuses the role and skill level of physician assistants with medical assistants, who perform basic clinical tasks after successfully completing a training and certification program. The clinical and academic training to become a physician assistant is very extensive. They are trained extensively in Family Medicine and Surgery from the same textbooks as Medical Students. In the office, our PA perform complete History and Physical Examinations, develop care plans, institute immediate x-ray and diagnostic testing, order medications as medically necessary, review and interpret lab test results. Our PA works under the supervision of attending physicians.
Our PA is credentialed in ACLS, BCLS, and PALS, and are held to the same quality assurance standards as physicians. Because the skill and knowledge of PAs help “extend” the work of physicians, PAs are often referred to as “physician extenders.” No matter what the terminology, the Physician and Physician Assistant team as it exists to deliver the highest quality care to the greatest number of patients who depend on us. Board Certified Physicians -- Board Certified PAs -- It is another way we help to take patient care from Good to Great.
